Successful psychotherapy requires an understanding of both conscious and unconscious dynamics. Causa præsenti—a term I have coined—emphasizes the transformative power of immediate experience, engaging the psyche in the present moment. Unlike approaches that focus on past causes (causa efficiens) or future goals (causa finalis), causa præsenti serves as the active pulse of the here-and-now in psychological healing. Jungian analysis recognizes that true transformation occurs through direct interaction with the unconscious as it manifests in real time. Active imagination, symbolic images, and embodied sensations provide access to the numinous, allowing for integrative change. This present-centered awareness cultivates a dynamic relationship with the unconscious, treating it as a partner rather than a relic of the past. In therapy, attention to causa præsenti bridges past and future by rooting healing in the immediacy of experience. This approach ensures that therapeutic work remains alive, transformative, and deeply personal, reinforcing the essential role of the "present" in psychological growth and individuation.
